The contrast between old and new that existed in Puerto Rico was incredible to experience. There’s something sacred about the physical link to centuries past, and overlap between the world of man and the animal world bridges the two well. The idea that the very birds flying across the clouds or the fish swimming through the shallows were the same ones the Spanish might have seen long ago is just… remarkable.

I took a picture of the massive heron (3-4 ft. tall) on the front cover near the Gozalandia Waterfalls.
